Message from the Dean of Sampoerna School of Education Greetings from Sampoerna School of Education! It is indeed an honor for me to welcome you all to our new school, the Sampoerna School of Education (SSE), Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan & Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Kebangkitan Nasional. Established in March 2009 under the auspices of the Sampoerna Foundation, the Sampoerna School of Education aims to create a new generation of high quality teachers for Indonesia, and to become Indonesia’s premier teacher education institution. SSE believes that a school is a mind-altering instrument, a means through which our future generation's minds are shaped with ideas, skills and beliefs about the world. As such, teacher is at the heart of a school, as stated by Linda Darling-Hammond (2009), a well-known educator from Standford University (http://ed.stanford.edu/suse/), that “rebuilding the system of our education will take many years of struggles and setbacks, as well as insights and epiphanies, to accomplish. But the rewards will be reaped with every child who experiences greater accomplishment and ability to contribute to the lives of others. Never before has the success, perhaps even the survival, of nations and people been so tightly tied to the ability to learn. Consequently, our future now depends, as never before, on our ability to teach. ” SSE is committed to prepare a new generation of Indonesian teachers with the attitudes, skills and knowledge to meet Indonesia’s 21st century education challenges and opportunities. It is SSE’s desire to have its student prepared for leadership roles in groundbreaking, cross-disciplinary inquiry that shapes educational practices in Indonesia as well as around the globe. As the first step, SSE offers Bachelor of Education (BEd) programs in the area of mathematics education and English language teaching which will be highly essential for our nation's future competitiveness. Our programs are designed and based on the national curriculum standards and context, while also being benchmarked to high quality international standards. As such, the mathematics and English teachers graduating from SSE will have four unique qualities. First of all they will be confident bilingual teachers who will be able to teach in either the English-medium or the Bahasa Indonesia-medium of instruction. The second essential quality will make them highly competent in using education technologies in promoting learning, social equity and cultural diversity in teaching and learning. The third essential quality focuses on being creative, innovative and effective in different pedagogical contexts. As a fourth essential quality, SSE graduates will have a strong research orientation and will be able to develop and become leading scholars in their discipline and amongst their academic peers. SSE’s graduates will be equipped with an understanding of higher order teaching skills, quality practices and a scholarly perspective that will enable them to contribute professionally in their discipline. To facilitate and achieve excellence in their profession, student will be immersed in classroom experiences from the first day of the program. To enrich their practical learning experiences, student will be heavily engaged with quality schools where they will be supervised by mentor teachers who work with SSE’s faculty in whole school development initiatives. They will also be able to draw on the resources of culturally diverse local communities, including the SSE’s information centre and a broad array of academic and leading edge technology support facilities. The future graduates of SSE will have a positive impact on the status, quality and reputation of our education system. New knowledge with higher expectations and standards will strengthen the work of teachers, administrators, researchers and other professionals in education. It is important that SSE and its student will be able to deal with these changes constructively. SSE will become a proven and effective teacher education institution based on high international standards that will help us to anticipate and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow. The excellence and outcomes of SSE will not come as a result of working alone. Workingwith compatible partners will be one of SSE’s core values. SSE and its Sampoerna Foundation Teacher Institute have enjoyed long standing collegial partnerships with peer institutions and will continue to forge greater collaboration with education industry partners in the future.
